Beekeeping tradition

Hi! First of all, we would like to welcome you and thank you for visiting our website.
We are Gonzalo Castro and Mabel Tuñón, two Asturians in love with Asturias, its nature, its landscapes, its people, its possibilities, …
In 2012, our project Ería de Valles – Tradición apícola was born from our interest in discovering a new world for us then: beekeeping. What began as a hobby became our passion and our financial means.
We are a young and entrepreneurial couple. We have built a project that currently has about 500 beehives spread throughout the Asturian geography, from areas close to the coast of the Cantabrian Sea, to the top of the Southwestern Asturian Mountains framed in the Parque Natural de Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias, in order to offer a wide variety of honey.
Products
One of our main goals is to offer the customer a careful, 100% natural and of excellent quality product. This is why since 2017, we are part of the brand “Alimentos del Paraíso Natural” that guarantees the origin and certifies the quality of our honey and since 2022 our honeys are certified by the PGI “Miel de Asturias”.
Besides honey, undoubtedly the best known product produced by bees, we also harvest pollen, royal jelly and propolis from our hives, maintaining our quality standards.
Diversity
In order to support other companies in the agricultural sector in Asturias, our bees are also used as pollinators in apple, blueberry, kiwi or avocado trees, a task that brings important benefits to the quality and production of these plantations.
In a field more focused on the beekeeping sector and both for our farms and for sale, we breed our queens to renew colonies and work year after year with genetically selected queens. We also produce for sale swarms of langstroth nuclei, composed of 5 bee frames (minimum 3 frames for breeding and one for honey and pollen).
Professional training
In this short journey, we have enjoyed every opportunity we have had to train and learn more about the sector to which we have decided to dedicate our lives. Therefore, we have attended several Nation Congresses held since 2014 (Santiago, Granada, Tenerife, Málaga y Zamora), different editions of beekeeping fairs and training sessions in different parts of the country (Pastrana (Guadalajara), Caminomorisco (Salamanca), Torrelavega (Cantabria), Oviedo, Zamora, Tarragona … and outside our borders, Castelo Branco (Portugal) o Avignon (France). We have taken courses on: initiation, queen breeding (with different national and international experts), melissopalynological analysis, sensory analysis, honey tasting, …
Facilities
Our facilities, located in Brañes (Oviedo) are adapted to our needs and prepared to facilitate our work. They also guarantee maximum conditions of hygiene and food safety. It is where we carry out the honey extraction process, as well as its packaging and labelling.
